Two new plays in Uptown theatres

By Patrick Erwin, editor-in-chief

Uptown theatergoers will soon have two new productions to choose from.

Profiles Theatre’s new venue, the Main Stage at 4139 N. Broadway St., hosts the American premiere of the new play by playwright Neil LaBute, In A Forest Dark and Deep.

The Profiles production opened April 19 and will run until June 3. LaBute has written over 20 plays since 1989, and has also seen many of those works adapted for film.

Just a few blocks away, the new Black Ensemble Theater is preparing for the opening of The Marvin Gaye Story. As with many Black Ensemble Theater productions, the show is written and directed by founder Jackie Taylor and draws from three decades of Gaye’s musical career.

Previews for The Marvin Gaye story will start on May 11 in the company’s new home at 4450 N. Clark St.
